I figure there would be no sense in building a wooden fishing kayak and not have a wooden paddle for it.
Again, I do some research on wooden paddles and read some of Nicks book again. I started the paddle process.
I picked out some cedar and popular to make the shaft. The blade is made out of differ colors of cedar and pine for contrast. I milled down a small piece of oak out of my moms house. It was a piece that had buckled after they had their house built. It is the stem for a little mor support and sentimental value, my mom loved to fish as well.
To build the paddle I glued 5 pieces of wood together. All five pieces where 3.5X22" and a small pice of oak on the side. After the glue had dried, (over night) I cut the shape to them and got the shaft prepped to glue it to the shaft.
I did not have any real good plans for this project, just some thoughts in my head. I cut the end of the shaft to match the arc of the blades and glued it all together. I am also a fan of the piranha paddles while kayak fishing for small adjustments with rod in hand so I tarted a similar small one handle paddle to match as well. It is a straight blade and I used the scrap that was left over after I cut the blades out of the one wood block I had glued together.
I also wanted a bent shaft for my project so I added some small pieces to the shaft while glueing it all together so I could rough cut the bent part into the shaft.
I used a "Draw" knife that was my grand fathers and his fathers before that my dad loaned me to round the shaft and fined toon the curve of the blades as well.
I am still working on the paddles but I have attached some images of the prices.
Feel free to contact me if you aw interested in making a wooden paddle, I can help with more details if need be.
I have some videos of a lot of this stuff I have been working on as well, I will try to up load some of them later when I get on my computer.
